Chapter 1
1 Job's Character and Wealth
There was a man 376 in the land 776 of Uz 5780 whose name 8034 was Job 347; and that man 376 was blameless 8535, upright 3477, fearing 3372 God 430 and turning 5493 away 5493 from evil 7451.
2 Seven 7651 sons 1121 and three 7969 daughters 1323 were born 3205 to him.
3 His possessions 4735 also were 7,000 sheep 6629, 3,000 camels 1581, 500 yoke 6776 of oxen 1241, 500 female 860 donkeys 860, and very 3966 many 7227 servants 5657; and that man 376 was the greatest 1419 of all 3605 the men 1121 of the east 6924.
4 His sons 1121 used to go 1980 and hold 6213 a feast 4960 in the house 1004 of each 376 one 376 on his day 3117, and they would send 7971 and invite 7121 their three 7969 sisters 269 to eat 398 and drink 8354 with them.
5 When 3588 the days 3117 of feasting 4960 had completed 5362 their cycle 5362, Job 347 would send 7971 and consecrate 6942 them, rising 7925 up early 7925 in the morning 1242 and offering 5927 burnt 5930 offerings 5930 {according to} the number 4557 of them all 3605; for Job 347 said 559, "Perhaps 194 my sons 1121 have sinned 2398 and cursed 1288 God 430 in their hearts 3824." Thus 3602 Job 347 did 6213 continually.
6 ¶ Now there was a day 3117 when the sons 1121 of God 430 came 935 to present 3320 themselves before 5921 the LORD 3068, and Satan 7854 also 1571 came 935 among 8432 them.
7 The LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "From where 370 do you come 935?" Then Satan 7854 answered 6030 the LORD 3068 and said 559, "From roaming 7751 about 7751 on the earth 776 and walking 1980 around 1980 on it."
8 The LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "Have you considered My servant 5650 Job 347? For there 369 is no 369 one 369 like 3644 him on the earth 776, a blameless 8535 and upright 3477 man 376, fearing 3372 God 430 and turning 5493 away 5493 from evil 7451."
9 Then Satan 7854 answered 6030 the LORD 3068, "Does Job 347 fear 3372 God 430 for nothing 2600?
10 "Have You not made 7753 a hedge 7753 about 1157 him and his house 1004 and all 3605 that he has, on every 5439 side 5439? You have blessed 1288 the work 4639 of his hands 3027, and his possessions 4735 have increased 6555 in the land 776.
11 "But put 7971 forth 7971 Your hand 3027 now 4994 and touch 5060 all 3605 that he has; he will surely curse 1288 You to Your face 6440."
12 Then the LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "Behold 2009, all 3605 that he has is in your power 3027, only 7534 do not put 7971 forth 7971 your hand 3027 on him." So Satan 7854 departed 3318 from the presence 6440 of the LORD 3068.
13 Satan Allowed to Test Job
¶ Now on the day 3117 when his sons 1121 and his daughters 1323 were eating 398 and drinking 8354 wine 3196 in their oldest 1060 brother's 251 house 1004,
14 a messenger 4397 came 935 to Job 347 and said 559, "The oxen 1241 were plowing 2790 and the donkeys 860 feeding 7462 beside them,
15 and the Sabeans 7614 attacked 5307 and took 3947 them. They also slew 5221 the servants 5288 with the edge 6310 of the sword 2719, and I alone have escaped 4422 to tell 5046 you."
16 While he was still 5750 speaking 1696, another 2088 also came 935 and said 559, "The fire 784 of God 430 fell 5307 from heaven 8064 and burned 1197 up the sheep 6629 and the servants 5288 and consumed 398 them, and I alone have escaped 4422 to tell 5046 you."
17 While he was still 5750 speaking 1696, another 2088 also came 935 and said 559, "The Chaldeans 3778 formed 7760 three 7969 bands 7218 and made 7760 a raid 6584 on the camels 1581 and took 3947 them and slew 5221 the servants 5288 with the edge 6310 of the sword 2719, and I alone have escaped 4422 to tell 5046 you."
18 While he was still speaking 1696, another 2088 also came 935 and said 559, "Your sons 1121 and your daughters 1323 were eating 398 and drinking 8354 wine 3196 in their oldest 1060 brother's 251 house 1004,
19 and behold 2009, a great 1419 wind 7307 came 935 from across 5676 the wilderness 4057 and struck 5221 the four 702 corners 6438 of the house 1004, and it fell 5307 on the young 5288 people 5288 and they died 4191, and I alone have escaped 4422 to tell 5046 you."
20 ¶ Then Job 347 arose 6965 and tore 7167 his robe 4598 and shaved 1494 his head 7218, and he fell 5307 to the ground 776 and worshiped 7812.
21 He said 559, "Naked 6174 I came 3318 from my mother's 517 womb 990, And naked 6174 I shall return 7725 there 8033. The LORD 3068 gave 5414 and the LORD 3068 has taken 3947 away. Blessed 1288 be the name 8034 of the LORD 3068."
22 ¶ Through all 3605 this 384 Job 347 did not sin 2398 nor 3808 did he blame God 430.
Chapter 2
1 Job Loses His Health
Again there was a day 3117 when the sons 1121 of God 430 came 935 to present 3320 themselves before 5921 the LORD 3068, and Satan 7854 also 1571 came 935 among 8432 them to present 3320 himself before 5921 the LORD 3068.
2 The LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "Where 335 have you come 935 from?" Then Satan 7854 answered 6030 the LORD 3068 and said 559, "From roaming 7751 about 7751 on the earth 776 and walking 1980 around 1980 on it."
3 The LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "Have you considered My servant 5650 Job 347? For there 369 is no 369 one 369 like 3644 him on the earth 776, a blameless 8535 and upright 3477 man 376 fearing 3372 God 430 and turning 5493 away 5493 from evil 7451. And he still 5750 holds 2388 fast 2388 his integrity 8538, although you incited 5496 Me against him to ruin 1104 him without 2600 cause 2600."
4 Satan 7854 answered 6030 the LORD 3068 and said 559, "Skin 5785 for skin 5785! Yes, all 3605 that a man 376 has he will give 5414 for his life 5315.
5 "However 199, put 7971 forth 7971 Your hand 3027 now 4994, and touch 5060 his bone 6106 and his flesh 1320; he will curse 1288 You to Your face 6440."
6 So the LORD 3068 said 559 to Satan 7854, "Behold 2009, he is in your power 3027, only 389 spare 8104 his life 5315."
7 ¶ Then Satan 7854 went 3318 out from the presence 6440 of the LORD 3068 and smote 5221 Job 347 with sore 7451 boils 7822 from the sole 3709 of his foot 7272 to the crown 6936 of his head 6936.
8 And he took 3947 a potsherd 2789 to scrape 1623 himself while he was sitting 3427 among 8432 the ashes 665.
9 ¶ Then his wife 802 said 559 to him, "Do you still 5750 hold 2388 fast 2388 your integrity 8538? Curse 1288 God 430 and die 4191!"
10 But he said 559 to her, "You speak 1696 as one 259 of the foolish 5036 women 5036 speaks 1696. Shall we indeed 1571 accept 6901 good 2896 from God 430 and not accept 6901 adversity 7451?" In all 3605 this 384 Job 347 did not sin 2398 with his lips 8193.
11 ¶ Now when Job's 347 three 7969 friends 7453 heard 8085 of all 3605 this 384 adversity 7463 that had come 935 upon him, they came 935 each 376 one 376 from his own place 4725, Eliphaz 464 the Temanite 8489, Bildad 1085 the Shuhite 7747 and Zophar 6691 the Naamathite 5284; and they made 3259 an appointment 3259 together 3164 to come 935 to sympathize 5110 with him and comfort 5162 him.
12 When they lifted 5375 up their eyes 5869 at a distance 7350 and did not recognize 5234 him, they raised 5375 their voices 6963 and wept 1058. And each 376 of them tore 7167 his robe 4598 and they threw 2236 dust 6083 over 5921 their heads 7218 toward the sky 8064.
13 Then they sat 3427 down 3427 on the ground 776 with him for seven 7651 days 3117 and seven 7651 nights 3915 with no 369 one 369 speaking 1696 a word 1697 to him, for they saw 7200 that {his} pain 3511 was very 3966 great 1431.
Chapter 3
1 Job's Lament
Afterward Job 347 opened 6605 his mouth 6310 and cursed 7043 the day 3117 of his {birth.}
2 And Job 347 said,
3 "Let the day 3117 perish 6 on which I was to be born 3205, And the night 3915 {which} said 559, 'A boy 1397 is conceived 2029.'
4 "May that day 3117 be darkness 2822; Let not God 433 above 4605 care 1875 for it, Nor 408 light 5105 shine 3313 on it.
5 "Let darkness 2822 and black 6757 gloom 6757 claim 1350 it; Let a cloud 6053 settle 7931 on it; Let the blackness 3650 of the day 3117 terrify 1204 it.
6 "{As for} that night 3915, let darkness 652 seize 3947 it; Let it not rejoice 2302 among the days 3117 of the year 8141; Let it not come 935 into the number 4557 of the months 3391.
7 "Behold 2009, let that night 3915 be barren 1565; Let no 408 joyful 7445 shout 7445 enter 935 it.
8 "Let those curse 6895 it who curse 779 the day 3117, Who are prepared 6264 to rouse 5782 Leviathan 3882.
9 "Let the stars 3556 of its twilight 5399 be darkened 2821; Let it wait 6960 for light 216 but have 369 none 369, And let it not see 7200 the breaking 6079 dawn 7837;
10 Because 3588 it did not shut 5462 the opening 1817 of my {mother's} womb 990, Or hide 5641 trouble 5999 from my eyes 5869.
11 ¶ "Why 4100 did I not die 4191 at birth 7358, Come 3318 forth 3318 from the womb 990 and expire 1478?
12 "Why 4069 did the knees 1290 receive 6923 me, And why 4100 the breasts 7699, that I should suck 3243?
13 "For now 6258 I would have lain 7901 down 7901 and been 8252 quiet 8252; I would have slept 3462 then 227, I would have been 5117 at rest 5117,
14 With kings 4428 and {with} counselors 3289 of the earth 776, Who rebuilt 1129 ruins 2723 for themselves;
15 Or 176 with princes 8269 who had gold 2091, Who were filling 4390 their houses 1004 {with} silver 3701.
16 "Or 176 like a miscarriage 5309 which is discarded 2934, I would not be, As infants 5768 that never 3808 saw 7200 light 216.
17 "There 8033 the wicked 7563 cease 2308 from raging 7267, And there 8033 the weary 3019 are at rest 5117.
18 "The prisoners 615 are at ease 7599 together 3162; They do not hear 8085 the voice 6963 of the taskmaster 5065.
19 "The small 6996 and the great 1419 are there 8033, And the slave 5650 is free 2670 from his master 113.
20 ¶ "Why 4100 is light 216 given 5414 to him who 6001 suffers 6001, And life 2425 to the bitter 4751 of soul 5315,
21 Who long 2442 for death 4194, but there 369 is none 369, And dig 2658 for it more 4480 than 4480 for hidden 4301 treasures 4301,
22 Who rejoice 8056 greatly, {And} exult 7797 when 3588 they find 4672 the grave 6913?
23 "{Why is light given} to a man 1397 whose 834 way 1870 is hidden 5641, And whom God 433 has hedged 5480 in?
24 "For my groaning 585 comes 935 at the sight 6440 of my food 3899, And my cries 7581 pour 5413 out like water 4325.
25 "For what 6343 I fear 6342 comes 857 upon me, And what 834 I dread 3025 befalls 935 me.
26 "I am not at ease 7951, nor 3808 am I quiet 8252, And I am not at rest 5117, but turmoil 7267 comes 935."
Chapter 4
1 Eliphaz: Innocent Do Not Suffer
Then Eliphaz 464 the Temanite 8489 answered 6030,
2 "If one ventures 5254 a word 1697 with you, will you become 3811 impatient 3811? But who 4310 can 3201 refrain 6113 from speaking 4405?
3 "Behold 2009 you have admonished 3256 many 7227, And you have strengthened 2388 weak 7504 hands 3027.
4 "Your words 4405 have helped the tottering 3782 to stand 6965, And you have strengthened 553 feeble 3766 knees 1290.
5 "But now 6258 it has come 935 to you, and you are impatient 3811; It touches 5060 you, and you are dismayed 926.
6 "Is not your fear 3374 {of God} your confidence 3690, And the integrity 8537 of your ways 1870 your hope 8615?
7 ¶ "Remember 2142 now 4994, who 4310 {ever} perished 6 being innocent 5355? Or where 375 were the upright 3477 destroyed 3582?
8 "According to what 834 I have seen 7200, those who plow 2790 iniquity 205 And those who sow 2232 trouble 5999 harvest 7114 it.
9 "By the breath 5397 of God 433 they perish 6, And by the blast 7307 of His anger 639 they come 3615 to an end 3615.
10 "The roaring 7581 of the lion 743 and the voice 6963 of the {fierce} lion 7826, And the teeth 8127 of the young 3715 lions 3715 are broken 5421.
11 "The lion 3918 perishes 6 for lack 1097 of prey 2964, And the whelps 1121 of the lioness 3833 are scattered 6504.
12 ¶ "Now a word 1697 was brought 1589 to me stealthily 1589, And my ear 241 received 3947 a whisper 8102 of it.
13 "Amid disquieting 8174 thoughts 8174 from the visions 2384 of the night 3915, When deep 8639 sleep 8639 falls 5307 on men 376,
14 Dread 6343 came 7122 upon me, and trembling 7461, And made all 7230 my bones 6106 shake 6342.
15 "Then a spirit 7307 passed 2498 by my face 6440; The hair 8185 of my flesh 1320 bristled 5568 up.
16 "It stood 5975 still 5975, but I could not discern 5234 its appearance 4758; A form 8544 {was} before 5048 my eyes 5869; {There was} silence 1827, then I heard 8085 a voice 6963:
17 'Can mankind 582 be just 6663 before 4480 God 433? Can a man 1397 be pure 2891 before 4480 his Maker 6213?
18 'He puts 539 no 3808 trust 539 even 2005 in His servants 5650; And against His angels 4397 He charges 7760 error 8417.
19 'How 637 much 637 more 637 those who dwell 7931 in houses 1004 of clay 2563, Whose 834 foundation 3247 is in the dust 6083, Who are crushed 1792 before 6440 the moth 6211!
20 'Between 4480 morning 1242 and evening 6153 they are broken 3807 in pieces 3807; Unobserved, they perish 6 forever 5331.
21 'Is not their tent-cord 3499 plucked 5265 up within them? They die 4191, yet without 3808 wisdom 2451.'
Chapter 5
1 God Is Just
"Call 7121 now 4994, is there 3426 anyone who will answer 6030 you? And to which 4310 of the holy 6918 ones 6918 will you turn 6437?
2 "For anger 7068 slays 2026 the foolish 191 man 191, And jealousy 7068 kills 4191 the simple 6601.
3 "I have seen 7200 the foolish 191 taking 8327 root 8327, And I cursed 6895 his abode 5116 immediately 6597.
4 "His sons 1121 are far 7368 from safety 3468, They are even oppressed 1792 in the gate 8179, And there 369 is no 369 deliverer 5337.
5 "His harvest 7105 the hungry 7457 devour 398 And take 3947 it to a {place of} thorns 6791, And the schemer 6782 is eager 7602 for their wealth 2428.
6 "For affliction 205 does not come 3318 from the dust 6083, Nor 3808 does trouble 5999 sprout 6779 from the ground 127,
7 For man 120 is born 3205 for trouble 5999, As sparks fly 5774 upward 1361.
8 ¶ "But as for me, I would seek 1875 God 410, And I would place 7760 my cause 1700 before 413 God 430;
9 Who does 6213 great 1419 and unsearchable things 2714, Wonders 6381 without number 4557.
10 "He gives 5414 rain 4306 on the earth 776 And sends 7971 water 4325 on the fields 2351,
11 So that He sets 7760 on high 4791 those who are lowly 8217, And those who mourn 6937 are lifted 7682 to safety 3468.
12 "He frustrates 6565 the plotting 4284 of the shrewd 6175, So that their hands 3027 cannot 3808 attain 6213 success 8454.
13 "He captures 3920 the wise 2450 by their own shrewdness 6193, And the advice 6098 of the cunning 6617 is quickly 4116 thwarted 4116.
14 "By day 3119 they meet 6298 with darkness 2822, And grope 4959 at noon 6672 as in the night 3915.
15 "But He saves 3467 from the sword 2719 of their mouth 6310, And the poor 34 from the hand 3027 of the mighty 2389.
16 "So the helpless 1800 has 1961 hope 8615, And unrighteousness 5767 must shut 7092 its mouth 6310.
17 ¶ "Behold 2009, how happy 835 is the man 582 whom God 433 reproves 3198, So do not despise 3988 the discipline 4148 of the Almighty 7706.
18 "For He inflicts 3510 pain 3510, and gives 2280 relief 2280; He wounds 4272, and His hands 3027 {also} heal 7495.
19 "From six 8337 troubles 6869 He will deliver 5337 you, Even in seven 7651 evil 7451 will not touch 5060 you.
20 "In famine 7458 He will redeem 6299 you from death 4194, And in war 4421 from the power 3027 of the sword 2719.
21 "You will be hidden 2244 from the scourge 7752 of the tongue 3956, And you will not be afraid 3372 of violence 7701 when 3588 it comes 935.
22 "You will laugh 7832 at violence 7701 and famine 3720, And you will not be afraid 3372 of wild 776 beasts 2421.
23 "For you will be in league 1285 with the stones 68 of the field 7704, And the beasts 2421 of the field 7704 will be at peace 7999 with you.
24 "You will know 3045 that your tent 168 is secure 7965, For you will visit 6485 your abode 5116 and fear 2398 no 3808 loss 2398.
25 "You will know 3045 also that your descendants 2233 will be many 7227, And your offspring 6631 as the grass 6212 of the earth 776.
26 "You will come 935 to the grave 6913 in full 3624 vigor 3624, Like the stacking 5927 of grain 1430 in its season 6256.
27 "Behold 2009 this 384; we have investigated 2713 it, {and} so 3651 it is. Hear 8085 it, and know 3045 for yourself."
Chapter 6
1 Job's Friends Are No Help
Then Job 347 answered 6030,
2 "Oh 3863 that my grief 3708 were actually 8254 weighed 8254 And laid 5375 in the balances 3976 together 3162 with my calamity 1942!
3 "For then 6258 it would be heavier 3513 than 4480 the sand 2344 of the seas 3220; Therefore my words 1697 have been 3886 rash 3886.
4 "For the arrows 2671 of the Almighty 7706 are within 5973 me, Their poison 2534 my spirit 7307 drinks 8354; The terrors 1161 of God 433 are arrayed 6186 against me.
5 "Does the wild 6501 donkey 6501 bray 5101 over 5921 {his} grass 1877, Or 518 does the ox 7794 low 1600 over 5921 his fodder 1098?
6 "Can something 8602 tasteless 8602 be eaten 398 without 1097 salt 4417, Or 518 is there 3426 any 3426 taste 2940 in the white 2495 of an egg 2495?
7 "My soul 5315 refuses 3985 to touch 5060 {them;} They are like loathsome 1741 food 3899 to me.
8 ¶ "Oh that my request 7596 might come 935 to pass 935, And that God 433 would grant 5414 my longing 8615!
9 "Would that God 433 were willing 2974 to crush 1792 me, That He would loose 5425 His hand 3027 and cut 1214 me off 1214!
10 "But it is still 5750 my consolation 5165, And I rejoice 5539 in unsparing pain 2430, That I have not denied 3582 the words 561 of the Holy 6918 One 6918.
11 "What 4100 is my strength 3581, that I should wait 3176? And what 4100 is my end 7093, that I should endure?
12 "Is my strength 3581 the strength 3581 of stones 68, Or 518 is my flesh 1320 bronze 5153?
13 "Is it that my help 5833 is not within me, And that deliverance 8454 is driven 5080 from me?
14 ¶ "For the despairing 4523 man 4523 {there should be} kindness 2617 from his friend 7453; So that he does not forsake 5800 the fear 3374 of the Almighty 7706.
15 "My brothers 251 have acted 898 deceitfully 898 like 3644 a wadi 5158, Like the torrents 650 of wadis 5158 which vanish 5674,
16 Which are turbid 6937 because 4480 of ice 7140 {And} into which the snow 7950 melts 5956.
17 "When 6256 they become 2215 waterless 2215, they are silent 6789, When it is hot 2552, they vanish 1846 from their place 4725.
18 "The paths 734 of their course 1870 wind 3943 along 3943, They go 5927 up into nothing 8414 and perish 6.
19 "The caravans 734 of Tema 8485 looked 5027, The travelers 1979 of Sheba 7614 hoped 6960 for them.
20 "They were disappointed 954 for they had trusted 982, They came 935 there 5704 and were confounded 2659.
21 "Indeed 3588, you have now 6258 become 1961 such 3808, You see 7200 a terror 2866 and are afraid 3372.
22 "Have I said 559, 'Give 3051 me {something,}' Or, 'Offer 7809 a bribe 7809 for me from your wealth 3581,'
23 Or, 'Deliver 4422 me from the hand 3027 of the adversary 6862,' Or, 'Redeem 6299 me from the hand 3027 of the tyrants 6184'?
24 ¶ "Teach 3384 me, and I will be silent 2790; And show 995 me how 4100 I have erred 7686.
25 "How 4100 painful 4834 are honest 3476 words 561! But what 4100 does your argument 3198 prove 3198?
26 "Do you intend 2803 to reprove 3198 {my} words 561, When the words 561 of one in despair 2976 belong to the wind 7307?
27 "You would even 637 cast 5307 {lots} for the orphans 3490 And barter 3739 over 5921 your friend 7453.
28 "Now 6258 please 2974 look 6437 at me, And {see} if 518 I lie 3576 to your face 6440.
29 "Desist 7725 now 4994, let there be no 408 injustice 5767; Even desist 7725, my righteousness 6664 is yet 5750 in it.
30 "Is there 3426 injustice 5767 on my tongue 3956? Cannot 3808 my palate 2441 discern 995 calamities 1942?
Chapter 7
1 Job's Life Seems Futile
"Is not man 582 forced 6635 to labor 6635 on earth 776, And {are not} his days 3117 like the days 3117 of a hired 7916 man 7916?
2 "As a slave 5650 who pants 7602 for the shade 6738, And as a hired 7916 man 7916 who eagerly 6960 waits 6960 for his wages 6467,
3 So 3651 am I allotted 5157 months 3391 of vanity 7723, And nights 3915 of trouble 5999 are appointed 4487 me.
4 "When 518 I lie 7901 down 7901 I say 559, 'When 4970 shall I arise 6965?' But the night 6153 continues 4058, And I am continually 7646 tossing 5076 until 5704 dawn 5399.
5 "My flesh 1320 is clothed 3847 with worms 7415 and a crust 1487 of dirt 6083, My skin 5785 hardens 7280 and runs 3988.
6 "My days 3117 are swifter 7043 than 4480 a weaver's 708 shuttle 708, And come 3615 to an end 3615 without 657 hope 8615.
7 ¶ "Remember 2142 that my life 2425 is {but} breath 7307; My eye 5869 will
